With a more than healthy tourism industry, hospitality is an important career field in Mexico. It takes ample training, know-how, cultural awareness and exceeding standards to keep tourists happy on their vacations and more importantly, eager to come back for more. The boom in Mexican tourism has forced the hospitality industry to expand as well as giving birth to new hotels, resorts, entertainment venues and restaurants all competing business in the hospitality industry.
Bartending
- Take beverage orders from serving staff or directly from patrons
- Help mix liquor, soft drinks, water and other ingredients to prepare cocktails and other drinks
- Learn how to prepare mixed drinks, wine, draft or bottled beer and non-alcoholic beverages for food and beverage servers or serve directly to patrons
- Collect payment for beverages and record sales
- Maintain inventory and control of bar stock and order supplies
- Clean bar area and wash glassware
- Help ensure compliance with provincial/territorial liquor legislation and regulations
Food and Beverage Servers
- Greet patrons, present menus, make recommendations and answer questions regarding food and beverages
- Help take orders and relay to kitchen and bar staff
- Learn how to recommend wines that complement patrons' meals
- Serve food and beverages
- Observe the preparation and service of specialty foods at patrons' tables
- Present bill to patrons and accept payment
- Help order and maintain inventory of wines and wine glassware
- Perform sensory evaluation of wines
Hotel Front Desk Clerk
- Help maintain an inventory of vacancies, reservations and room assignments
- Learn how to register arriving guests and assign rooms
- Familiarize self with how to answer enquiries regarding hotel services and registration by letter, by telephone and in person, provide information about services available in the community and respond to guests' complaints
- Compile and check daily record sheets, guest accounts, receipts and vouchers using computerized or manual systems
- Present statements of charges to departing guests and receive payment
Hotel Worker i.e., Housekeeping
- Sweep, mop, wash, wax and polish floors
- Dust furniture and vacuum carpeting and area rugs, draperies and upholstered furniture
- Make beds, change sheets and distribute clean towels and toiletries
- Attend to guests' requests for extra supplies
- Stock linen closet and supplies area
- Clean, disinfect and polish kitchen and bathroom fixtures and appliances
- Clean and disinfect public areas such as changing rooms, showers and elevators
- Disinfect operating rooms and other hospital areas
- Pick up debris and empty trash containers
- Wash windows, walls and ceilings
- Report and store lost and found items
- May provide basic information on facilities
- May handle complaints
Restaurant Waiter/Waitress
