Conquered by the Spanish Empire in the 16th century, Peru achieved independence in 1821 to become a representative democracy. With a population estimated to be around 29.5 million people, the country is a multiethnic region including Amerindians, Europeans, Africans, and Asians, resulting in a mixture of cultures that has affected art, cuisine, literature, and music. Geographically speaking, Peru again displays diversity as it combines narrow plains, the Andes Mountains and the Amazon Rainforest into one country featuring a tropical climate and incredible biodiversity.
